Content Management Systems and Search Engine Optimization

When search engine optimization first came out, META tags were the way to get “in” with Google and other search engines. As always, good, simple ways of telling people what your site is about were made obsolete when they were misused. Today, increasing the Google rankings of your site is of utmost importance and the most complicated part of building a website. Search Engine Optimization is the most important part of your website. I hope that after you have read this, you will have a better understanding of what your SEO specialist is doing.

Content Management Systems (otherwise know as CMS), are generally referred to as “blogs” that use multiple types of media to give information out to internet users. The most common forms are text, video, photos and recordings. In dealing with organic Search Engine Optimization, we will focus on text portions of your website and on the coding aspects that compliment the text optimization.

Keywords
Generally, your SEO specialist will start by focusing on the phrases/keywords that users will consider when searching for your products or services. SEO keywords are what drive users to a web page or a web site, which is important since the user will use such keywords to locate your site.

In order to reach Google’s top ranking, you need to make sure that the keywords you are using are relevant to your products and services. Search Engines like Google and Yahoo are programmed to ignore keywords that are not used and/or do not relate to the content of the webpage. For example, if you were to list keywords at random ie: lemons, limes, oranges, grapefruits for a furniture export website, they would be overlooked. Make sure that your keywords are in the body of the article as well as somewhere in between. A handy trick for this is using Tags.

Tags
Frequently, you see a section called ‘tags’ on a website. This refers to a collection of words or phrases that describe a photo, video or even a section of content on your website. Your keywords should also be tags on your website and you will probably have more tags than keywords.

TRACKBACK/LINKBACK/PINGBACK
Keeping track of who is linking to your website is a must for SEO. The more websites that link back to you that you share information with, the higher your websites’ page rankings will be. If a link is not relevant to your site, it will not increase your page rankings.

Permalink’s and URL’s
Most CMS create multiple pages for each post or entry. One time consuming task is setting up your CMS to create only one URL for each entry. If Google has four different URLs for one of your posts, and the URL that is the highest ranking is no longer in existence, this makes the ranking useless. Taking the extra time or spending the extra money on a SEO specialist who has a programmer to make sure that these details are seen to. Another handy trick is specifying the exact URL for a page, using your keywords.

Post Slug
Use your best words to describe what your post is about and make sure you are using your keywords and tags when you describe it.

One thing to actually avoid or use very little of is just randomly linking out or Blogrolling. Having numerous links to your site not placed within the content of another website ‘for example in a blogroll’, does not increase your rankings. If you love a website and want to help improve their page rankings, link to their site from your content. If a site is a resource your users might find helpful, place it in your ‘blogroll’ and don’t worry about the link affecting your search rankings.

The best content in the world is useless if no one sees it. You should use your keywords and tags in your website, but don’t limit yourself to them. Always be open to new ideas and ways to be able to promote your website. Your keywords need to be assessed at least every 3 months to make sure they are still working for you and adjusted if they are not. SEO can take months to show any improvement in your page rankings while you are researching and trying out new keywords.
